When you’re wrong, you’re wrong.  And I can admit as much.  I had been one of the only ones to not fall in love immediately with Arriana Occhipinti’s SP68.  This was a slow build.  But it has culminated in true love.  Not just hearing everyone and their mother banging on about Occhipiniti wines, I had to find my own way.  I tried to deny the fact, but upon the third time trying SP68 I am hooked.  Hook, line, and sinker in fact!  I cannot say that Arriana and her perfect words on wine have not had something to do with it.  But, then again, that all works hand in hand doesn’t it.  SP68 is the (very) real deal.  Widely available.  Find this and never look back.

"I think wine is supposed to reflect where it comes from, not where it’s going..." -Arriana Occhipinti

If ever you were wondering what all the talk about Natural/Organic/Bio wines means, these words from Arriana are probably the best explanation I have come across.

Arrianna Occhipinti:  “In wine making, we often hear the terms ‘organic’ and ‘biodynamic.’ Being certified as organic or biodynamic applies to the agricultural element of wine making: the grape growing. This includes avoiding the use of chemical products, using specific treatments and fertilizers derived from plant and animal materials, favoring manual labor in the vineyards, and in the case of biodynamic farming, following the lunar cycle for the vineyard work.  However, being certified as organic or biodynamic doesn’t apply to techniques or products that the winemaker may use to transform the grapes into wine. That’s where the term ‘natural’ comes in; it means that the winemaker minimizes intervention and manipulation during the wine making process as much as possible so that the finished product is a reflection of the terroir (the soil, location, and altitude as well as the climate and conditions of a particular vintage).”

Occhipinti 2009 SP68 IGT Sicilia ~$25.00

A blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, this is real deal Sicilian wine.  It is a fresh cherry; sweet and tart and savory.  It’s sprinkled with pepper and zest and it is alive and seems to explode out of the glass.  Awesomeness.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
